Hey there, fellow adventurers! Shawna here, your trusted source for all things related to moving abroad and living your best life. Today, let’s delve into a crucial topic for those planning to relocate to Spain or Portugal: health insurance.
Spain
When it comes to moving to a new country, ensuring you have adequate healthcare coverage is paramount. Whether you’re applying for a visa, contemplating a long-term stay, or simply exploring your options, having the right health insurance is non-negotiable.
Let’s start with Spain, a country renowned for its rich culture, delectable cuisine, and stunning landscapes. While Spain boasts a universal healthcare system that covers residents and legal residents, those applying for visas or planning extended stays often require private health insurance. Providers like DKV, Sanitas, Adeslas, and Mapfre offer comprehensive coverage tailored to the needs of expats at competitive rates.
Be cautious with age requirements!
Be careful when you are looking for coverages around Spain, because some will have an age cap.
Additionally, for visa applicants under 65 years old, I recommend exploring InnoInsure’s visa insurance policy here.
However, if you’re over 65, fret not!
You can still secure insurance through my father-in-law, Francis Payne, who provides a one-stop solution for your insurance needs.Â

Portugal
Now, let’s shift our focus to Portugal, a country known for its charming cities, picturesque coastline, and warm hospitality. Like Spain, Portugal offers both public and private healthcare options. Visa applicants often need to present proof of private health insurance coverage, with companies like Médis, Multicare, and Allianz Global Assistance offering tailored plans for expats. For those considering Portugal or other European countries, the insurance coverage provided by VFS Global (https://www.vfsglobal.com/en/individuals/travel-insurance.html) is an excellent option.
Rest of Europe
For those considering Portugal or other European countries, the insurance coverage provided by VFS Global (https://www.vfsglobal.com/en/individuals/travel-insurance.html) is an excellent option. However, I suggest chatting with the insurance provider to ensure that the plan aligns with the requirements of your intended visa and destination country. Remember, the requirements can vary significantly between countries, so it’s crucial to do your due diligence.
